The Hidden Job Market Is Real — Here's How to Reach It
Most roles are filled before they're ever posted. If you only apply to listings, you're competing for the leftovers. Here's how to get in earlier.

The job you'll eventually take may never appear on a job board. Companies fill a large share of roles through referrals and direct outreach before HR ever writes a posting. By the time it's public, the shortlist often already exists.
Why the best roles stay quiet
Posting a job is expensive and slow. When a manager has a strong candidate from their network, they'd rather skip the flood of 300 applications entirely. The "hidden market" isn't a secret club — it's just hiring that happens through people instead of portals.
How to actually reach it
You don't need a huge network. You need a small number of real conversations, consistently:
- Make a list of 15 companies you'd genuinely want to work for.
- Find one person at each doing work adjacent to yours.
- Ask for a 20-minute conversation about their work — not a job.
Two real conversations a week with people will out-perform fifty cold applications a week to portals. The math feels wrong until you've lived it.
The ask that works
Nobody wants to be hit with "are you hiring?" from a stranger. People are surprisingly generous, though, when you're curious about their work:
After a good conversation, follow up in a month with something useful — an article, an intro, a thought. You're building a relationship, not cashing a favor.
Applying to listings isn't wrong. It's just the most crowded door. Spend part of your week walking through the quieter ones.
