Passing the Recruiter Phone Screen
The first call isn't a technical test — it's a filter for fit, motivation, and salary alignment. Prepare for those three things and you'll clear it.

Before you talk to a hiring manager, you talk to a recruiter — usually for fifteen to thirty minutes. Candidates over-prepare for the technical rounds and wing this one, then wonder why they never advanced. The phone screen is its own filter, and it checks three things.
The three questions behind every screen
Every recruiter call is really asking:
- Can you do the job? — a quick sanity check that your background matches the posting. Have a two-sentence version of your relevant experience ready.
- Do you actually want this job? — "Why are you interested in us?" is not small talk. Name something specific about the role or company.
- Will the numbers work? — expected compensation and start date. Know your range before the call so you're not improvising.
Have your headline ready
You'll almost always get "walk me through your background." This is not your life story — it's a 60-second arc: where you are now, one or two proof points, and why you're looking. Practice it out loud once so it comes out clean.
Resumez's job match highlights exactly where your profile lines up with the posting — the perfect script for the "why are you a fit?" question.
